Building a more secure, trustworthy and decentralized digital future

DIDLab is a research-driven technology and innovation initiative dedicated to cybersecurity, distributed trust, privacy-preserving technologies, decentralized systems and experiential learning.

Our goal is not simply to study technology, but to build, experiment, verify, educate and turn innovation into practical solutions.

Our story

From defense in depth to distributed trust

DIDLab takes its name from Defense in Depth (DiD), the cybersecurity principle of multiple, complementary layers of protection.

Digital systems now span organizations, cloud infrastructure, connected devices, decentralized networks, AI systems and individuals. Protecting single systems is no longer enough. We also have to address identity, trust, privacy, data ownership, transparency, accountability and resilience.

So we extend defense in depth toward distributed and verifiable trust: security built into every layer of a system, trust established through evidence rather than unquestioned authority, and people keeping meaningful control over their information.

For us, decentralization is not only about blockchain. It is about how people, systems and organizations can work together securely without depending on unnecessary intermediaries. Transparency and privacy should reinforce each other: a trustworthy system makes the relevant claims verifiable without exposing sensitive information.

Our mission

To advance secure, privacy-preserving and trustworthy digital systems by connecting research, hands-on education, technological innovation and community collaboration.

We want advanced cybersecurity and distributed technologies to be understandable, testable and useful, not only to researchers and engineers but to students, professionals, businesses and communities.

Our mark

Three ideas, one system

The DIDLab mark is built from the three principles behind everything we research, teach and build.

  • Defense in depth

Two nested layers. Security exists at every layer, and no single wall protects a system on its own.

  • Distributed trust

Three linked nodes. Trust is earned through evidence and verification between participants, not granted by one central authority.

  • Privacy by design

An open, protected center. Data and identity stay with their owner, guarded by the layers around them.

What we do

Eight connected initiatives

Research, education, experimentation, technology development and community are the ways our philosophy becomes useful. Each initiative shows its real stage.

01ActiveCyber Ranges and Experiential LearningHands-on environments where people investigate threats, apply defenses, analyze evidence and see the consequences of security decisions.02ActiveBlockchain, Web3 and Distributed TrustSecure, verifiable and decentralized systems, with blockchain treated as an enabling technology where decentralization gives a real advantage.03In developmentPrivacy-Preserving Computing and Trustworthy AISecurity and privacy across machine learning, large language models and federated learning, so AI systems are effective, accountable and respectful of sensitive data.04Future directionCyber-Physical Systems, IoT and Emerging Technology SecurityTrust beyond conventional computers: connected devices, sensors, edge computing and operational networks.05In developmentProfessional Education and Workforce DevelopmentClosing the gap between emerging research and the skills industry needs, through learning by doing.06Future directionCybersecurity Services and Organizational ResilienceA planned service and community-clinic initiative to help small and medium-sized organizations understand and improve their security posture.07ActiveResearch, Knowledge Sharing and Open InnovationConnecting research outcomes with reusable knowledge: publications, testbeds, prototypes, documentation and teaching material.08In developmentCommunity, Collaboration and an Innovation EcosystemConnecting students, educators, practitioners, developers, researchers and entrepreneurs, so learners become builders and contributors.

Our long-term vision

A connected ecosystem for secure, private and decentralized innovation

Where research creates knowledge, education develops capability, communities build solutions, and technology earns trust through verifiable evidence.

A living laboratory for digital trust

An evolving foundation where ideas in security, distributed systems, Web3, privacy and trustworthy AI are designed, tested, challenged and refined.

A platform for continuous learning

Reusable learning paths with realistic practice and measurable outcomes for students, educators, professionals and organizations.

Privacy-preserving, verifiable applications

Practical technologies that help people and organizations establish trust, show accountability and keep information private.

A collaborative research community

Pathways from early research ideas to working prototypes, shared by researchers, industry, students, developers and entrepreneurs.

A sustainable, independent ecosystem

A balanced mix of research funding, sponsored projects, education, training and carefully scoped services, reinvested in infrastructure, people and research.

Our guiding principles

How we decide what to build

  • Security by designSecurity belongs in every layer of a system, not added afterwards.
  • Privacy by designPeople and organizations keep control of sensitive information, and collection stays limited to what is necessary.
  • Distributed and verifiable trustTrust rests on evidence, secure protocols, independent verification and accountable processes.
  • Responsible decentralizationDecentralize only where it solves a real problem or improves resilience or autonomy.
  • Learning through experimentationUnderstanding grows by building, testing, analyzing failures and applying the lessons.
  • Openness and collaborationInteroperability and shared knowledge make digital ecosystems stronger.
  • Real-world impactResearch and technology should produce measurable benefits for people, organizations and society.
Building what comes next

Where each initiative stands today

DIDLab is an evolving initiative. Not everything is a finished product or a public service: some work is active, some is in development, and some is a future direction.

Trust should be earned through evidence. Security should exist at every layer. Privacy should be respected by design. Innovation should empower people.
